THE CELEBRATION OF AN AMERICAN SAINT -

19 January 2009, 7:07 am

“We must evolve for all human conflict a coherent method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.”  Martin Luther King Jr.

I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. King, though I heard almost every public presentation he ever made since 1963.  The American humanist patron Saint of Peace and Brotherhood is an inspiration today as he was 40-years ago.  Has it been 40-years?

On this day of celebration, it is not only the words of King, but of Gandhi, Tutu, Truman, Eisenhower and other leaders of movements for peace that should live in our hearts.  It is also a day to celebrate the movements that have lead to one of the greatest political events in our life time.  Though Dr. King was the focus of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, he never worked alone.  In the words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has.”

Our 44th president has asked that the American citizens give of their time and energy towards community service today, tomorrow and beyond.  By working in our communities, we are working for peace.  By working with our neighbors we are working towards peace.  By working with our children, we are promoting peace now and for the future.

Shalom, Salam, Peace
