COMMENTARY: And their off at the governing races.

15 January 2009, 12:12 pm

Governor Jay Nixon

Their off!

And the race is on and I hope that heartache does not take it all.

It is wonderful that Governor Nixon is getting off to a fast start.  I am just a bit worried, say pessimistic, when I remember all of the promises and great beginnings of the FDR reign and how many of the programs were scuttled by the courts.

Executive orders are one thing.  New legislation is something different, as Mr. Nixon will find out shortly.  But so far so good.

Our new state leader is forging ahead with the advancement for business, especially small business in Missouri.  He is working with the Department of Economic Development and the Missouri Development Finance Board to develop a low or no interest loan program for small business.  Nixon is working to end the patronage system for awarding contracts.  His selections for high ranking appointed officials so far look good.  But can he work with a divided General Assembly?  How will he work with Republican Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder?  How will Kinder work with Nixon?

And everyone with their hands out to the state and federal governments, how will the two new leaders fair when their supporters feel jilted when the moneys they need is just not available?

Welcome to the Grey Dome, Mr. Nixon.  I hope your quick start does not cause you to start losing momentum on January 20.
